As your weight loss continues, go through your closet and donate clothes that are now too large for you to Goodwill. It is a great way to reflect on your weight-loss success, and it builds your confidence for the road ahead. It also gives you further motivation to maintain the size you currently are.

There is no magic pill for weight loss. You have to change what you are doing physically and tweak what you are putting into your body. If you will follow our tips, you will find success at effectively losing the weight that you want to lose and keeping it off.

I started at 417 pounds. I could barely walk.

I had to sleep sitting up for years because if I were to lay down I would suffocate under my own weight.

I sprained/fractured my ankle multiple times due to my weight.

I had no hope. I was going to die.

I had weight loss surgery in July 2011.

I started walking with 30 seconds.

That was all I could do but I added a little bit each day.

17 months later, I do Crossfit.

I've lost 200 pounds.

My brother has lost 275 pounds.

Now he runs Triathlons

I could have lost the weight faster, but I wasn't interested in rapid weight loss, I was interested in LASTING weight loss. Also, I am only 5 foot tall, so 38 lbs. was A TON of weight for someone my height.

Top 8 Don'ts
1) Alcohol
2) Sugar (Excluding fruit)
3) Eating out (This is something I reserve for special occasions.)
4) Soda
5) Eating food that comes from a box (Boxed dinners, crackers, cereal, granola bars, etc.)
6) Eating big dinners or a lot of food before bedtime (I know this one can be controversial, again, I'm just telling you what I did to lose weight.)
7) Make excuses
8) Stop once you are at your goal (Keep up the healthy habits)

Top 8 Do's
1) Make a meal plan for the entire week. Prepare for it and stick to it!
2) Eat plenty of nutritious food: vegetables, protein, fruit. The more "good" food you eat, the less room there will be for you to crave and eat the "bad" food.
3) Exercise. I do at least 150 minutes of cardio a week plus strength training.
4) Take it one day at a time. Break it up into one meal at a time and one workout at a time to make your goal manageable.
5) Record your weight weekly at the same time of the day each week. Personally, I do Friday mornings! (I've kept this up during my weight maintenance and it is KEY for me.)
6) Keep motivated. Have daily reminders and a support system of why you want to achieve your goal.
7) Eat breakfast (I say, the bigger the better!)
8) Drink lots of water

Here's a glimpse into my daily meals that I eat/make during the week.

Breakfast: fresh fruit and yogurt or maybe an omelette or bagel or oatmeal with fresh fruit and a bottle of water or fresh juice, or maybe cereal *it really varies(I don't drink coffee or soda)

*on Saturday or Sunday I'll have waffles with fresh fruit and whipped cream :)

Snack 1: Fiber One bar or a granola bar, fruit snacks, and a bottle of water

Lunch: a salad with spring mixed greens, fruit, cashews, and grilled chicken, and a bottle of water
*my lunches may vary:
sometimes I'll have sushi
sometimes I'll have a turkey or grilled chicken wrap or pita(or sandwich) or sandwich and soup from Panera Bread
sometimes I'll have a bowl from Chipotle(I can only eat 1/3 because those things are huge lol)

Snack 2: Fiber One bar and a smoothie or maybe popcorn
*I don't stick to a meal plan, it really depends on how I feel each day
*if you don't want to make your own I love the Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness smoothie or the Naked Green Machine smoothie

Dinner: typically baked or grilled protein (chicken or fish/seafood) with a veggie, a starch, and water or 100% juice

*my dinners really vary:
sometimes I'll make a homemade pizza
sometimes I'll make fish or shrimp tacos
sometimes I'll make a turkey burger
sometimes I'll make seafood pasta
on the weekends my husband and I will go out to eat

*I drink at least 5 bottles of water per day

When I want ice cream, lobster rolls, or crab cakes(my loves) I eat them! LOL

Snack 3: Fiber One bar and a bottle of water

*I try to eat 3 Fiber One bars per day to get my daily source of fiber

*I don't eat pork at all
*I don't eat ground red meat or red meat at all *except an occasional steak
*I only eat organic fruits, veggies, and produce(been doing this for 5+ years)
*I didn't cut out carbs, I LOVE bread and pasta!
*I didn't solely eat protein or vegetables
*I do ocassionally eat Zaxby's and Chipotle *once a month, if that
*I don't do "master cleanses" or juice diets
*For me this is about living a healthy lifestyle for me, not about fads or "quick fixes"
*I do not recommend crash dieting or starving yourself, those are not healthy
*My routine is about maintaining my overall health and increasing my fitness

My Workout Regimen:

My At Home Workout(I do this once or twice per week +Zumba Core for Wii at least 3 times per week):
-200 jumping jacks with 10 lb ankle weight on each leg (4reps of 50)
-100 step-ups with 10 lb ankle weight on each leg (50 on each leg)
-50 donkey kicks with 10 lb ankle weight on each leg (25 on each leg)
-200 sit ups (4 reps of 50)
-200 bicycle ab exercises (4 reps of 50)
-100 russian ab twists (4 reps of 25)
-arm exercises with 6 lb weight in each hand

*I do at least 100 squats per day.
*half are weighted(ankle weights & dumbbells) deep squats & sumo squats

*to reach my weightloss goal I added 30-35 minutes of intense cardio circuits 2-3 per week to my normal routine

If I go to the gym:
-I do the treadmill, stairmaster, bicycle.

Heed all disclaimers! This wasn't the easiest of a video to do...no one likes talking about their own imperfections but hopefully you guys can see that Im not immune to gaining weight. I know I wasnt *heavy* but I knew I could be better. Its not about being skinny, its about being the very best version of yourself that you can possibly be. And for me (personally) thats not really skinny- i think I looked like an emaciated lollipop in that photo.

Dont give up! It takes awhile to figure out what works and what doesnt for you. Its frustrating at times but just enjoy the journey and be proud of how far youve come :)

PS. I really cant give a good answer to generic work out questions. These kind of videos always spark a flurry of "I want to lose weight what should I do?" type of questions. Theres no secret- eat clean, stay active, drink water and lots of rest!

'Dallas Buyers Club' will also star Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. The film is based on the true-life tale of Ron Woodroof. The film is set to be released in 2013
