Why Women Should Consider This for Great Health

Why Women Should Consider This for Great HealthProbiotics, the popular natural supplements containing live friendly bacteria, have a wide spectrum of potential uses. That is what this series of articles has explored over the past several days. Here I look at some specific uses for probiotics for our female readership. And a bonus look at three common “atopic” diseases.

Urogenital infections, such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast vaginitis, and urinary tract infection, affect a staggering one billion women around the world. They do respond well to antibiotics. But these infections often recur; they keep happening, in part because the bacteria ascend from the rectum to the vagina and then the bladder. So antibiotics can’t be considered the best approach here.

A 2003 landmark study with 64 women showed that taking the probiotics “Lactobacillus rhamnosus” and “L. fermentum” every day helped reduce yeast and coliform bacteria in the vagina. A Canadian urologist first conceived the concept of restoring probiotics in the vagina as a way of preventing future infection. Since then, research has shown that certain strains of probiotics can colonize the vagina and reduce the risk of urinary tract infection, yeast vaginitis, and bacterial vaginosis. Women could reduce infections by between 50% and 80%.

Using probiotics in this way has great possibilities for patients and physicians. Women can take supplements by mouth, which then colonizes the intestine and vagina, thus maintaining urogenital health. This is a great step in the direction of therapy, because people can skip seeing the doctor and use it themselves, but the proper strain must be used for best effect.

Atopic Diseases

Atopic diseases are thought to be the result of an imbalanced immune response to our environmental or dietary allergens. The three involved here are allergic rhinitis (hay fever), atopic dermatitis, and asthma. The fact that there are more atopic diseases in the developed countries as compared to underdeveloped countries may be the result of reduced microbial pressure, or exposure to microbes during childhood.

Probiotics taken during pregnancy has been shown to confer protection against atopic disease in newborn infants. Supplements with “Bifidobacterium lactis” or “Lactobacillus GG” reduced the extent and severity of atopic eczema in infants and young children.

A 2006 study found that probiotics are effective in treating allergies caused by pollen, if you can believe it! Same goes for allergies caused by dust mites.

Should Nuns Be Given The Pill For Health Reasons?

Professor Roger Short, from the University of Melbourne, and Dr Kara Britt, from Monash University, argue in a comment piece in The Lancet, that since the contraceptive pill reduces overall mortality and mortality specifically linked to ovarian and uterine cancer, nuns should be given the pill for health, rather than contraceptive, reasons.

Nulliparous women - or women who do not have children - have more ovulatory menstrual cycles than women who have children, due to the absence of pregnancy and lactation. This increased number of cycles increases cancer risk. Other factors increasing the overall number of cycles, regardless of having children or not, also increase cancer risk, such as going through puberty earlier or menopause later. Women who have children further decrease their risk of these cancers if they have their first child at a young age, bear more children, and breastfeed.

The authors say studies have shown that overall mortality in women using the contraceptive pill is 12% lower than in those who have never used it. The risk of developing ovarian and endometrial cancers falls by 50-60% in pill users compared with women who have never used it, and protection persists for 20 years, showing a clear long-term benefit.

"Of course, as with any medication, the pill is not risk-free. For example, the combined oestrogen/progestogen pill can increase the risk of blood clots, and as such the woman's medical history should always be considered," they argue.

However they acknowledge that the Catholic church condemns all forms of contraception, as outlined by Pope Paul VI in Humanae Vitae in 1968.

"Humanae Vitae never mentions nuns, so they should be free to use the contraceptive pill to protect against the hazards of nulliparity since the document states that 'the Church in no way regards as unlawful therapeutic means considered necessary to cure organic diseases, even though they also have a contraceptive effect'.

"If the Catholic church could make the contraceptive pill freely available to all its nuns, it would reduce the risk of those accursed pests, cancer of the ovary and uterus, and give nuns' plight the recognition it deserves."

What Habit You Should Consider Quitting to Avoid Bone Loss

Drinking coffee seems to have many health benefits, but there could also be some negative effects on your bone health. Let's check this concern out.Drinking coffee seems to have many health benefits, but there could also be some negative effects on your bone health. Let’s check this concern out.

It has long been known that caffeine from coffee or tea can lead to calcium loss in the body. It is estimated that, for each cup of coffee drank, less than five milligrams of calcium will be lost from the body. It is of no surprise to read reports linking coffee drinking and bone loss especially in postmenopausal female. A report from the UK reported such an association in 205 healthy, nonsmoking, postmenopausal women.

In this study, the key findings include:

– In women on optimal calcium intake (744 mg/day), the bone mineral density was not affected by caffeine intake.

– Women on less than optimal calcium intake and the highest caffeine intakes (more than 450 mg/day) had the most significant bone loss, as compared to those women consuming less caffeine. These authors concluded that drinking two to three cups of brewed coffee may increase bone loss from the spine in women who are not taking in the optimal calcium.

This early study was later confirmed in a U.S. study involving 489 elderly women aged 65 to 77 years old. In this study, women who drank 18 ounces of brewed coffee containing 300 mg caffeine a day showed accelerated bone loss at the spine. Examining all the risk factors for osteoporosis in women, researchers concluded: “Life study modification emphasizing bone-healthy habits such as adequate calcium and vitamin D nutrition, regular exercise, limitation of caffeine and alcohol consumption, and avoidance of tobacco are essential to the management of osteoporosis risk.”

Why Every Man Should Take Vitamin D

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have found yet another health benefit associated with vitamin D. The sunshine vitamin has been purported to protect against cancer, asthma, fatigue, and arthritis. Now, Harvard researchers have this health advice: vitamin D could protect against heart disease — especially if you are a man.

A research team followed nearly 119,000 adults for two decades. Out of 45,000 men, there were about 5,000 new cases of cardiovascular disease over the study period. These were defined by an incident of heart attack, stroke, or death attributed to cardiovascular disease.

The researchers then accounted for a range of factors, like age, weight, exercise levels and diet habits, such as fat intake. They discovered that men who got at least 600 IU of vitamin D from food and supplements had a 16% lower risk of heart attack and stroke compared to men who got less than 100 IU of vitamin D per day.

Interestingly though, for women, there was no correlation between vitamin-D intake and cardiovascular health. It’s not clear why that is, the researchers say. One possibility is that women may have less active vitamin D circulating in the blood. Vitamin D is stored in fat, and women typically have a higher percentage of body fat than men do.

In theory, vitamin D could help ward off heart disease and stroke. Vitamin D could help maintain healthy blood vessel function and blood pressure levels, reduce inflammation in the blood vessels, and aid blood sugar control. But the researchers say more clinical trials are needed to prove these health benefits.

In the meantime, they suggest, stick with your doctor’s advice about how to protect your heart. You’ll also want to maintain a healthy weight, get regular exercise, avoid smoking, and eat a well-balanced diet.

To boost your vitamin-D levels and improve your natural health, get 10 to 15 minutes of sun on your arms and face, without applying sunscreen first. Sunlight triggers vitamin-D synthesis in your body. Dietary sources of vitamin D are relatively rare, but you can try these healing foods to boost levels: salmon; mackerel; and fortified dairy products and cereals.
