This Special Oil Could Protect Your Heart

This Special Oil Could Protect Your HeartA topic that never ends in the health world is the seeking out of heart-healthy foods. Being in the health business, we often bring you natural heart remedies. So here is one more: garlic oil.

A new study has found that a component of garlic oil may help release protective compounds to the heart after heart attack, during cardiac surgery, or as a treatment for heart failure.

At low concentrations, hydrogen sulfide gas has been found to protect the heart from damage. However, this unstable and volatile compound has been difficult to deliver as a therapy.

RECOMMENDED: Choosing the Best Cooking Oils

Now researchers have turned to diallyl trisulfide, found within garlic oil, as a way to deliver the benefits of hydrogen sulfide to the heart. Their findings suggest that indeed it could be used in many of the same situations as hydrogen sulfide.

The breakthrough data were presented last week at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.

(By the way, here is a story on three great heart-boosting herbs: http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/heart-health-articles/three-great-heart-boosting-herbs)

What happened was that researchers blocked the coronary arteries of mice for 45 minutes. This simulates a heart attack. Just before blood flow was restored, they gave them diallyl sulfide culled from garlic oil. The compound reduced the proportion of damaged heart tissue in the area at risk by 61% compared with untreated animals.

When oxygen and blood flow are interrupted, it damages mitochondria, which can lead to cell death. But garlic oil’s key component can temporarily turn down the function of mitochondria, ensuring that less damaging substances are released.

Another team was looking into a related matter. “Transverse aortic constriction” results in enlargement of the heart and is a model of heart failure. Diallyl sulfide twice daily, given after aortic constriction, could reduce heart enlargement, they found. Basically, garlic has long been studied for its effects on heart health. While studies have been mixed over time, garlic has been linked to helping treat high blood pressure and preventing heart disease. This is another good-looking, promising study to add some weight to the subject. Remember that crushing garlic when cooking helps open up its healthful ingredients more so than chopping it.

Coriander is a herb often used in Indian food. It is almost guaranteed to be included in any curry dish. Coriander is also used quite frequently in Thai cooking. It has a delicious taste that is quite distinct and unique. What an added bonus that this tasty herb is also very good for you! Researchers have determined that coriander could help lower blood glucose and LDL cholesterol levels.

A recent clinical trial set out to investigate the potential hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activity of coriander seed. In the animal study, coriander extract was given to both obese rats with elevated blood glucose and cholesterol levels and normal rats. The researchers found that the coriander extract suppressed hyperglycemia in the obese rats and helped to lower LDL cholesterol levels. They concluded that coriander seed extract in obese rats normalized glycemia and decreased elevated levels of insulin. The researchers also noted that coriander seed extract lowered cholesterol and exerted a cardio-protective effect. They finished their conclusions by stating the study validates the traditional use of coriander in the treatment of diabetes.

Use coriander seeds as an alternative remedy to fend off diabetes and cholesterol. The seeds are also a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, iron, and calcium. Remember to use the fresh leaves in salads and other recipes — they are a good source of vitamins A and C. Coriander is naturally low in sodium and saturated fat.

The herb has long been used as a natural digestive aid and is said to help relieve gas pains. It is an antiseptic and has actually been used to preserve meat, as it kills off the harmful bacteria that grow as meat ages. It has also traditionally been used as an alternative remedy to combat anxiety and insomnia.

Green Tea: Could This Be The Best Benefit Yet?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Many health breakthroughs involve green tea. This is one of them. A new piece of health news focuses on obesity, showing that mice on green tea were able to keep pounds off more easily in spite of a high-fat diet.

Green tea belongs both in the healing foods and the natural supplements categories. The new study is further proof. In it, obese mice that were fed a compound found in green tea along with a high-fat diet gained weight far more slowly than mice not receiving the green tea supplement.

The two groups of mice were fed a high-fat diet. Mice fed epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a compound found in most green teas, gained weight 45% more slowly than the control group of mice eating the same diet without EGCG. Gaining weight more slowly allows you more time to burn it off.

On top of lowering weight gain, the mice fed the green tea supplement showed a nearly 30% increase in “fecal lipids,” which means EGCG may be limiting the absorption of fat from food.

The green tea did not appear to suppress appetite. Both groups of mice were fed the same amount of high-fat food and could eat at any time. The researchers equated it to both groups consuming a milkshake, but one group has mixed green tea in theirs.

In the study, the level of EGCG used is the equivalent of 10 cups of green tea. However, you should note that supplements are easy to find these days. Past studies have, however, shown that a few cups of green tea a day could control weight. It appears that the ancient beverage does have effects on body composition.

Adding green tea to one’s diet is a positive idea on many fronts. It has been linked to health promotion in a variety of areas, including possible cancer prevention. It is considered one of the oldest, and most healthful, beverages in the world.

If you are looking to shed pounds, you must exercise regularly and maintain a nutritious diet on top of taking supplements or drinking green tea.

Why Your TV Watching Could Be Killing You

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Do you enjoy sitting in front of the TV and watching all your favorite shows? Does the time pass and before you know it hours have passed? Well — you might be interested to know about this latest health news from researchers at the University of Queensland. The Aussie scientists have determined that people who average six hours a day of TV live about five years less than people who watch no TV.

For the study, the research team used data on 11,000 people aged 25 and older from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study. This study included survey information about how much TV people watched in a week. The team also looked at national population and mortality figures.

Now for the TV watching totals: in 2008, Australian adults watched 9.8 billion hours of TV. Those who watched more than six hours of TV were in the top one percent for TV viewing.

The researchers found that, for every hour of television watched after age 25, lifespan fell by 22 minutes. Of course this link between a shortened lifespan and spending hours watching the tube is likely an indirect one. The more time you spend watching TV, the more time you likely spend eating mindlessly while you watch your favorite shows, and the less time you actually spend being physically active.

It may also be true that if you are watching a lot of TV every day, you may be a little isolated from the rest of the world and not participating in social interactions or activities with others. This can lead to feeling lonely or a little depressed and this state, over the long term, can lead to an earlier death.

Should you be worried about excessive TV watching? The researchers have this health advice: too much TV may be as dangerous as smoking and lack of exercise in reducing your life expectancy. Smoking can shorten your life by more than four years after the age of 50. That represents 11 minutes of life lost for every cigarette and that’s the same as half an hour of TV watching, the researchers said.

Without TV, the research team estimates life expectancy for men would be 1.8 years longer and for women, 1.5 years longer.

Remember that staying active and shortening the time spent stationary in front of the TV may be a great alternative cure for reducing the risk of heart disease and other life-threatening complications.

Strict diet could save brain from aging: study

Eating less may keep the mind young, according to Italian scientists who reported Monday they have discovered the molecular process by which a strict diet may save the brain from the ravages of age.

The research, published in the US journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is based on a study of mice that were fed a diet of about 70 percent of the food they normally consumed.

Scientists found the calorie-restricted diet triggered a protein molecule, CREB1, that activates a host of genes linked to longevity and good brain function.

"Our hope is to find a way to activate CREB1, for example through new drugs, so to keep the brain young without the need of a strict diet," said lead author Giovambattista Pani, researcher at the Institute of General Pathology, Faculty of Medicine at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome.

Researchers have previously discovered that mice on diets showed better cognitive abilities and memory, less aggression, and tended to avoid or delay Alzheimer's disease. But they have not known exactly why.

"CREB1 is known to regulate important brain functions as memory, learning and anxiety control, and its activity is reduced or physiologically compromised by aging," said the study.

Mice that were genetically altered to lack CREB1 showed none of the same memory benefits if they were on a low-calorie diet as mice that had the molecule, and showed the same brain disabilities as mice that were overfed.

"Thus, our findings identify for the first time an important mediator of the effects of diet on the brain," Pani said.

"This discovery has important implications to develop future therapies to keep our brain young and prevent brain degeneration and the aging process."

According to Marc Gordon, chief of neurology at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York, the findings could shed new light on why some people who are obese in middle age encounter cognitive problems later in life.

"Mid-life obesity has been associated with late-life dementia. However, the physiological basis for this association remains unclear," said Gordon, who was not part of the study.

"These investigators have studied the effects of limiting caloric intake in mice, and have identified a biochemical pathway that may mediate at least some of the brain's responses to dietary restriction."

These Vitamin Deficiencies Could Cause Depression

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Vitamins overall have enjoyed a flurry of health breakthroughs over the past half-century. Slowly, we’ve started learning about their powers in disease prevention on top of the fact that they are essential to our bodies. Those with depression might want to know that not getting enough of three critical B-vitamins might be secretly causing their condition.

A quick note on clinical depression. You technically must have at least five of the following (and definitely either one or two) symptoms:

1. Depressed mood
2. Loss of interest or pleasure in things you used to like
3. Significant appetite or weight loss/gain
4. Insomnia or oversleeping
5. Feeling restless and jittery or overly slow
6. Fatigue/loss of energy
7. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
8. Can’t think, concentrate, or make decisions
9. Thoughts of suicide or death

Now, several B-vitamins are known to cause some depression and fatigue if they are in low quantities in your bloodstream. The most notable one may be vitamin B1 (thiamin), a nutrient that influences your brain and cognitive function.

In fact, interestingly, a deficiency of thiamin causes a disease called “beriberi,” which is an East Asian word meaning “I can’t, I can’t.” Fatigue, weakness, and lack of motivation are commonly experienced by people who are low in this vitamin. Along with depression, they might experience mood swings, uneasiness, confusion, loss of appetite, sleep problems, muscle weakness, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Beriberi is most often seen in developing countries, in alcoholics, and in those with an impaired ability to absorb thiamin.

Vitamin B12 is another likely candidate. Vegans and vegetarians who avoid dairy products and eggs are frequently deficient. There are also those who cannot properly absorb the vitamin. Your body absorbs B12 by combining it with a protein called the “intrinsic factor” and in some people there isn’t enough of this protein in the digestive juices. People who are deficiently low experience fatigue, first and foremost. Then, depression and anxiety take the stage.

Third is vitamin B6. This one is the most common water-soluble vitamin deficiency in older adults and in children. It’s likely that well over half the population doesn’t have enough vitamin B6 flowing in their systems. A minor deficiency in this nutrient may be causing your depression. And, along with it: skin problems; a smooth, red, sore tongue; confusion; weight loss; and possible convulsions.

If you have concerns about your nutritional status, speak to your doctor, but also consider a naturopath. And taking a B-complex vitamin supplement is more or less a no-brainer.

This Common Food Additive Could up Your Risk for Diabetes

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

There are many additives used in the foods you eat. All are supposed to be harmless and safe for human consumption. Today’s health news is about one so called “harmless” food additive: “carrageenan.” Carrageenan is used as a thickening agent. It is processed from seaweed or algae. Food manufacturers often laud the fact that carrageenan is vegetarian unlike another popular thickening agent — gelatin — that is extracted from animal bones.

Carrageenan is often added to milk products. It also crops up in wines and beers, sliced meats, and even toothpaste. But this additive has been shown in a recent clinical trial to cause problems with insulin levels and may up your risk for getting diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago studied the impact of carrageenan on glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and insulin signaling in mice. They noted at the outset of the study that carrageenan is known to cause inflammation, which is associated with diabetes.

The mice were given carrageenan in their drinking water, and underwent a glucose tolerance test and an insulin tolerance test. The researchers found that glucose tolerance was significantly impaired in carrageenan-treated mice compared with untreated controls. Baseline insulin levels were also significantly higher following carrageenan treatment. Interestingly, during the insulin tolerance test, glucose levels declined by more than 80% in controls, but not in carrageenan-treated mice.

The researchers say this is the first report of the impact of carrageenan on glucose tolerance and shows that carrageenan impairs glucose tolerance, increases insulin resistance, and inhibits insulin signaling. They suggest that these effects may result from carrageenan-induced inflammation. They concluded by stating directly that carrageenan in the human diet may contribute to the development of diabetes.

If you are struggling with your blood sugar, or just want to make sure that diabetes is never a health concern for you, you may want to watch your intake of carrageenan.

The Vegetable That Could Prevent Colon Cancer

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Are you the skeptical type? Do like to have solid, definitive proof before believing in something? Well — how about this latest health news about a food that could actually prevent cancer? Researchers have found that broccoli is 95% lethal against colon cancer cells.

Colon cancer usually takes hold in the large intestine or the rectum. Although it is considered one of the leading causes of death when compared with other forms of cancer, if diagnosed early, it can often be completely cured. Colon cancer starts to grow in glands in the lining of your colon and rectum. Doctors often refer to this type of cancer as “colorectal cancer.” You can be at a higher risk for colon cancer if you eat a diet high in red or processed meats, already have cancer somewhere else, have inflammatory bowel disease, or have a family history of colon cancer.

When it comes to treating and preventing the disease, diet may play a key role. Everything you eat likely makes its way to the colon eventually. The more healthy food you digest, the less chance there is for toxins and other unhealthy substances to cause negative genetic changes in your colon cells. This is exactly why you’ll want to add broccoli to your diet on a regular basis.

In one recent clinical trial, scientists studied the effects of a broccoli extract on different human cancer cell lines. The scientists found that broccoli specifically excelled in its performance against colon cancer cells. In fact, the tasty vegetable showed 95% lethality when attacking the cancer cells! It would be hard to argue that broccoli shouldn’t be considered a natural cancer cure after a performance like that.

Broccoli’s health benefits don’t stop with cancer-prevention. The veggie is also thought to have strong anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in the treatment against arthritis.

For more information on this topic, read the article, The Arthritis-Shielding Veggie.

Your Joint Pain Could Be Caused by Your Sleep Problems

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Getting a good night’s sleep is a regular aspect of any doctor’s health advice. Right up there behind healthy eating and exercising. A new study has found an alarming link between sleep problems and an increased risk for joint pain. The kind caused by fibromyalgia.

It found that the risk of fibromyalgia increased with the severity of sleep problems. The study, performed on women, showed a stronger link in middle-aged and older women. Results were published in “Arthritis & Rheumatism.”

(Sleep problems don’t just affect joint pain. Read the article, How You Sleep Could Affect Your Blood Pressure)

Experts estimate that fibromyalgia — a chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome — affects more than five million Americans. Studies have shown it typically strikes in middle age, and 90% of patients are women. While previous research has found that insomnia, nighttime waking, and fatigue are symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia, it was unknown if sleep issues were actually helping cause fibromyalgia.

Researchers from Norway led the investigation, by scrutinizing a large health study. They selected 12,350 women who were free of musculoskeletal pain and movement disorders for the current study.

The findings were clear: a strong association exists between sleep disturbance and fibromyalgia risk in adult women. Women who often reported sleep problems had a greater risk of fibromyalgia than those who never experienced sleep problems.

At follow-up, 327 women had developed fibromyalgia. This is an incidence proportion of 2.6% during 10 years. The adjusted relative risk for women who reported having sleep problems “often” or “always” was 5.41 among women over 45 years of age. The researchers believe that more studies are needed to investigate whether early detection and treatment of sleep disturbance reduces the risk of fibromyalgia in women.

Insomnia is a frustrating part of life for a huge number of people. But it can be helped. Alternative medicine offers such relief as valerian root, melatonin, relaxation therapies, aromatherapy, and meditation. Tackling sleep disorders takes considerable effort, but it can be done. Speak to your physician and obtain a referral to a sleep clinic to get started and learn what the issues are.

Could Allergies Help Protect You From Cancer?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

It’s not often you hear good news about allergies, but this health e-letter is about to give you some. Allergies, as you probably know, can be debilitating for some people. Contact allergies can be particularly troublesome. These are the allergies that crop up when you come into contact with a specific substance like a chemical or a metal. But now researchers have some positive news about contact allergies: apparently people with this type of allergy may have immune systems that could protect against certain cancers.

In a new study, researchers looked at almost 17,000 Danish adults who were tested for contact allergies between 1984 and 2008. About one-third (or 35%) tested positive for at least one contact allergy. After looking at the data, the research team determined that women were more likely than men to have a contact allergy — 41% versus 26%. Now here’s where the study gets really interesting. When the research team examined cancer cases among the participants over the long term, they found that men and women with contact allergies had significantly lower rates of breast and non-melanoma skin cancer. Not only that — but women with contact allergies also had lower rates of brain cancer compared to those without contact allergies.

On the downside, people with contact allergies did show higher rates of bladder cancer. The researchers explained this anomaly by suggesting that higher levels of chemical metabolites accumulated in the blood may have contributed to bladder cancer.

Unfortunately, the researchers could not comment on why the link between contact allergies and lower risk for some cancers exists. They hope to perform more research. They do know the link has something to do with the immune system. Perhaps finding the reason for the connection will lead to a better understanding of how the immune system, altered in just the right way, could prevent the growth of cancerous tumors.
