These Supplements Help Keep Colon Cancer at Bay
AppId is over the quota
One of the oldest healing foods around is the unmistakable root vegetable, ginger. A prized asset throughout many ancient systems of medicine (like Chinese medicine), ginger has long been linked to health benefits. This new one is very exciting: ginger supplements may help prevent colon cancer.
Cancer prevention is the name of the game, of course. In the latest study, ginger supplements lowered colon inflammation, suggesting that this supplement may have potential as a colon cancer prevention agent. It was published in “Cancer Prevention Research.”
Researchers enrolled 30 patients and randomly assigned them to two grams of ginger root supplements per day or placebo for a month. After 28 days, they measured levels of colon inflammation and found statistically significant reductions in most of these inflammation markers in those who took ginger.
In old studies, inflammation has been implicated as a precursor to colon cancer. That said, a separate trial would be needed to see exactly how ginger root affects risk for colon cancer, one of the most fatal cancers.
The researchers believe that interest in this finding, and others in the natural medicine world, will only increase as time goes on. That is because people are increasingly looking for ways to prevent cancer that are non-toxic, and ways to improve quality of life that are not expensive.
Here are some other ways you could reduce your risk for colon cancer. Get regular screenings starting in your 40s. There is a variety of tests available; just work out which might be best for you with your doctor.
Also, you can modify your lifestyle to help prevent colon cancer. Some tips:
– Eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. They contain nutrients, fiber and antioxidants that help shield you from cancer.
– Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all. Aim for no more than a drink a day for women, and two a day for men.
– If you smoke, quit. Lung cancer is far from the only cancer you put yourself at risk for with this habit.
– Exercise as often as you can. Optimally, get a half hour every day.
– Try to keep a healthy weight. Eating right and exercising will certainly help. If you need to shed pounds, ask a doctor or physiotherapist about ways to do so. Increase exercise and reduce caloric intake.

These Vitamin Deficiencies Could Cause Depression
AppId is over the quota
Vitamins overall have enjoyed a flurry of health breakthroughs over the past half-century. Slowly, we’ve started learning about their powers in disease prevention on top of the fact that they are essential to our bodies. Those with depression might want to know that not getting enough of three critical B-vitamins might be secretly causing their condition.
A quick note on clinical depression. You technically must have at least five of the following (and definitely either one or two) symptoms:
1. Depressed mood
2. Loss of interest or pleasure in things you used to like
3. Significant appetite or weight loss/gain
4. Insomnia or oversleeping
5. Feeling restless and jittery or overly slow
6. Fatigue/loss of energy
7. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
8. Can’t think, concentrate, or make decisions
9. Thoughts of suicide or death
Now, several B-vitamins are known to cause some depression and fatigue if they are in low quantities in your bloodstream. The most notable one may be vitamin B1 (thiamin), a nutrient that influences your brain and cognitive function.
In fact, interestingly, a deficiency of thiamin causes a disease called “beriberi,” which is an East Asian word meaning “I can’t, I can’t.” Fatigue, weakness, and lack of motivation are commonly experienced by people who are low in this vitamin. Along with depression, they might experience mood swings, uneasiness, confusion, loss of appetite, sleep problems, muscle weakness, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Beriberi is most often seen in developing countries, in alcoholics, and in those with an impaired ability to absorb thiamin.
Vitamin B12 is another likely candidate. Vegans and vegetarians who avoid dairy products and eggs are frequently deficient. There are also those who cannot properly absorb the vitamin. Your body absorbs B12 by combining it with a protein called the “intrinsic factor” and in some people there isn’t enough of this protein in the digestive juices. People who are deficiently low experience fatigue, first and foremost. Then, depression and anxiety take the stage.
Third is vitamin B6. This one is the most common water-soluble vitamin deficiency in older adults and in children. It’s likely that well over half the population doesn’t have enough vitamin B6 flowing in their systems. A minor deficiency in this nutrient may be causing your depression. And, along with it: skin problems; a smooth, red, sore tongue; confusion; weight loss; and possible convulsions.
If you have concerns about your nutritional status, speak to your doctor, but also consider a naturopath. And taking a B-complex vitamin supplement is more or less a no-brainer.

Hearing Loss Can Be Associated with these Levels
AppId is over the quota
Homocysteine is an amino acid that’s been in the news a lot over the past year. And the press is not good. High levels of homocysteine have been named as a risk factor in the development of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis — to name just a few conditions.
Well — now researchers have discovered another link between high levels of homocysteine and compromised health. It seems that the amino acid can be harmful for your hearing. Researchers at the Centre for Vision Research, University of Sydney, Australia, have discovered that increased levels of homocysteine can more than double your risk for hearing loss.
There are many reasons why homocysteine levels might become high in your body. Medical scientists have recently learned that there’s a jump in the amino acid’s levels when there’s a decline in folic acid (folate) levels. Low folic acid levels are a problem for many people, because they don’t eat enough fruits, vegetables, and grains. All of these healing foods are rich in folate.
For the study, the Aussie researchers looked at homocysteine levels, B12 and folate to see if there were any links between the three when it came to hearing loss. They used data from The Blue Mountain Hearing Study, which was a survey of 2,956 participants. They found that elevated levels of homocysteine increased the likelihood of prevalent hearing loss by 64%. Low serum folate levels also increased the odds for hearing loss. The researchers found no significant association between levels of B12 and hearing loss risk.
However, B12 does play an important role in controlling homocysteine levels in your body. Both folate and B12 convert homocysteine to “methionine,” an amino acid that plays a vital role in protein synthesis. When this conversion doesn’t occur, high homocysteine levels are the result.
Is there a way you can lower high homocysteine levels? Yes — by paying a little more attention to your nutritional health! Eating more fruits and vegetables (especially leafy green vegetables) can help lower levels. You can increase the folate you get in your diet by adding fortified breakfast cereals, lentils, asparagus, spinach, and most beans. You might want to consider taking a folate supplement and/or a vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 supplement. And, the last bit of health advice to protect your hearing: boost your B12 levels by adding dairy products, organ meats (such as liver), beef, and fish to your menu.
