This Special Oil Could Protect Your Heart
AppId is over the quota
A topic that never ends in the health world is the seeking out of heart-healthy foods. Being in the health business, we often bring you natural heart remedies. So here is one more: garlic oil.
A new study has found that a component of garlic oil may help release protective compounds to the heart after heart attack, during cardiac surgery, or as a treatment for heart failure.
At low concentrations, hydrogen sulfide gas has been found to protect the heart from damage. However, this unstable and volatile compound has been difficult to deliver as a therapy.
RECOMMENDED: Choosing the Best Cooking Oils
Now researchers have turned to diallyl trisulfide, found within garlic oil, as a way to deliver the benefits of hydrogen sulfide to the heart. Their findings suggest that indeed it could be used in many of the same situations as hydrogen sulfide.
The breakthrough data were presented last week at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.
(By the way, here is a story on three great heart-boosting herbs: http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/heart-health-articles/three-great-heart-boosting-herbs)
What happened was that researchers blocked the coronary arteries of mice for 45 minutes. This simulates a heart attack. Just before blood flow was restored, they gave them diallyl sulfide culled from garlic oil. The compound reduced the proportion of damaged heart tissue in the area at risk by 61% compared with untreated animals.
When oxygen and blood flow are interrupted, it damages mitochondria, which can lead to cell death. But garlic oil’s key component can temporarily turn down the function of mitochondria, ensuring that less damaging substances are released.
Another team was looking into a related matter. “Transverse aortic constriction” results in enlargement of the heart and is a model of heart failure. Diallyl sulfide twice daily, given after aortic constriction, could reduce heart enlargement, they found. Basically, garlic has long been studied for its effects on heart health. While studies have been mixed over time, garlic has been linked to helping treat high blood pressure and preventing heart disease. This is another good-looking, promising study to add some weight to the subject. Remember that crushing garlic when cooking helps open up its healthful ingredients more so than chopping it.

This Acid Is Great for Your Heart
AppId is over the quota
Taurine isn’t one of those minerals that get the spotlight in health news. It’s usually passed over in favor of other, better-known amino acids like homocysteine or tryptophan. But taurine has an important job to do when it comes to the proper functioning of your body. High concentrations of this amino acid are found in your heart muscle, skeletal muscle, nervous system and white blood cells.
Researchers at the Institute for World Health Development in Nishinomiya, Japan, investigated taurine for a possible beneficial role in the prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease. For their study, which was coordinated by the World Health Organization, the research team reviewed surveys pertaining to diet in 61 different Japanese populations. In particular, they collected data related to cardiovascular disease risk and mortality.
They found that participants with higher taurine levels had significantly lower body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and total cholesterol when compared with those having the lowest taurine levels. Cardiovascular risks were intensified in individuals whose taurine and magnesium levels were lowest. The researchers noted that taurine may beneficially affect those who experience salt-sensitive blood pressure rise.
The research team concluded that the preventative effects of taurine make it good for health and longevity. They also cite the example of Australian Aboriginals who live near the coastal areas in Victoria. These peoples traditionally ate taurine- and magnesium-rich foods and were free from the ravages of cardiovascular disease 200 years ago. Presently, though, this population has nearly the highest cardiovascular risks because of dietary changes. 200 years ago they were eating seafood, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and milk — a diet similar to that of prehistoric hunters’ and gatherers’ and high in taurine.
To boost your nutritional health, add these taurine-rich foods to your diet: eggs; fish; meat; and milk.

Why Vegetarians Are Less Prone to c, Heart Problems
AppId is over the quota
The world’s greatest food cures come from vegetables. These natural foods are absolutely key to natural health, and a new study has just slapped a big exclamation mark on things. It found that vegetarians may be at lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
Specifically, the new study found that vegetarians experience a 36% lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome than non-vegetarians. Because metabolic syndrome can be a precursor to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, the findings indicate that vegetarians may be at lower risk of developing these conditions.
Metabolic syndrome means that you have at least three out of five of these: high blood pressure; low HDL cholesterol; high glucose levels; elevated triglycerides; and an unhealthy waist circumference. The researchers found that, while 25% of vegetarians had metabolic syndrome, the number rises to 37% for semi-vegetarians and 39% for non-vegetarians.
Since metabolic syndrome is such a big problem in the U.S. and leads to very dangerous health situations, the researchers wanted to find lifestyle choices that people could use to prevent and even treat the disorder.
They knew there would be differences between vegetarians and those who are not, but the researchers were surprised by the significant variance between the two groups. This shows that what you elect to eat in your daily diet can be important in the prevention of metabolic syndrome.
The health news came via a study on 700 adults randomly selected from a long-term study of lifestyle and health in nearly 100,000 people. Of the 700, 35% were vegetarian. These people had lower triglyceride levels, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, waist circumference, and body mass index. Semi-vegetarians also had a significantly lower BMI and waist circumference compared to those who ate meat more regularly.
This works once again to show that diet improves so many of the serious risk factors that put you at risk of heart disease. People who choose a plant-based diet are making a wise choice for health. While becoming a vegetarian may be difficult for most, choosing to ramp up vegetables in the diet is not hard at all.

The Benefits of Fatty Fish for Your Heart, Part 2
AppId is over the quota
(Note: This week, Dr. Juan will be focusing on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, especially for your heart. Here’s part two of his three-part series)
The second part of this in-depth look at the monumental food cure, omega-3 fatty acids, takes aim at high blood pressure. Hypertension is one of society’s most prevalent health issues and any doctor’s advice would begin with maintaining healthy levels in order to protect yourself from serious disease. One good step is to introduce fatty fish to the diet.
Strong evidence says that if your blood pressure drops by five or six millimeters of mercury (mmHg), your risk of stroke drops by 40% and coronary heart disease (CHD) by 15% to 20%. How does fish oil’s blood-pressure-lowering effect compare with traditional drugs? In a meta-analysis published in 1993, which reviewed 31 placebo-controlled studies with a total of 1,356 individuals, the results show:
— There was no effect of fish oil on blood pressure of healthy individuals with normal blood pressure on 4.2 grams a day of fish oil — but there was a significant lowering effect in patients with high blood pressure on a daily intake of four grams of fish oil.
— Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were both responsible for blood-pressure-lowering effects.
— Average mean reduction in systolic (upper number) and diastolic (lower number) blood pressure by fish oil was 3.0 mmHg and 1.5 mmHg, respectively.
— There was a dose-response relationship seen; namely, the more fish oil ingested, the greater the drop in blood pressure.
— A fish oil dose less than or equal to 3.0 grams a day: 1.3-mmHg systolic and 0.7-mmHg diastolic drop.
— A fish oil dose of 3.3 to 7.0 grams a day: 2.9-mmHg systolic and 1.6-mmHg diastolic drop.
— A fish oil dose of 15 grams a day: 8.1-mmHg systolic and 5.8-mmHg diastolic drop.
In 2002, a meta-analysis of 90 randomized clinical studies in which 22 were of the highest quality, a daily intake of 3.7 grams of fish oil in those with normal blood pressure was linked with a reduction of systolic blood pressure by 2.1 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 1.6 mmHg. Greater blood pressure-lowering effects were seen in those older than 45 years old and in people with hypertension. Therefore, one can say that the blood pressure-lowering effects of fish oil in patients with hypertension are similar to that of drug treatment.
However, several smaller studies showed no such effects using daily fish oil dose between one gram and four grams on blood pressure in patients after heart attacks, as well as those who suffer high blood pressure.
