Coriander is a herb often used in Indian food. It is almost guaranteed to be included in any curry dish. Coriander is also used quite frequently in Thai cooking. Researchers have determined that coriander could help lower blood glucose and LDL cholesterol levels.

A recent clinical trial set out to investigate the potential hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activity of coriander seed. In the animal study, coriander extract was given to both obese rats with elevated blood glucose and cholesterol levels and normal rats. The researchers found that the coriander extract suppressed hyperglycemia in the obese rats and helped to lower LDL cholesterol levels. They concluded that coriander seed extract in obese rats normalized glycemia and decreased elevated levels of insulin. The researchers also noted that coriander seed extract lowered cholesterol and exerted a cardio-protective effect. They finished their conclusions by stating the study validates the traditional use of coriander in the treatment of diabetes.

Use coriander seeds as an alternative remedy to fend off diabetes and cholesterol. The seeds are also a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, iron, and calcium. Remember to use the fresh leaves in salads and other recipes — they are a good source of vitamins A and C. Coriander is naturally low in sodium and saturated fat.

The herb has long been used as a natural digestive aid and is said to help relieve gas pains. It is an antiseptic and has actually been used to preserve meat, as it kills off the harmful bacteria that grow as meat ages. It has also traditionally been used as an alternative remedy to combat anxiety and insomnia.

The researchers also found that cinnamon increases the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors, which play an essential role in regulating your metabolism. Cinnamon’s most impressive and consistent action against diabetes was its ability to improve fasting glucose levels.

Along with offering benefits in the control and prevention of diabetes, cinnamon was found to be anti-inflammatory and may help to improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure. The researchers concluded by saying that it might be jumping the gun to suggest that cinnamon be used as a supplement to treat diabetes. However, its positive effects on glucose control are undeniable.

Other natural remedies for diabetes prevention include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and eating foods low on the glycemic index (GI). Certain foods that you may not be aware of will actually spike your insulin levels. Macaroni and cheese, white rice, and even a simple baked potato are all high on the GI list. This Indian Spice Is Anti-diabetic

Cumin is a popular spice used in Mexican, Indian, and Middle Eastern cooking. Cumin has a few special powers when it comes to your nutritional health. It can stimulate your digestive enzymes and help you to break down nutrients, so they can be used as fuel and other resources by the rest of your body. Cumin seeds are a good source of iron. They are thought to exert an anti-tumor effect against cancer. And now researchers have found that cumin seeds may also have a unique ability to keep blood glucose in check.

For their study, the research team investigated the effect of an extract of cumin seeds on diabetes and oxidative stress. (By the way, cumin has other great health properties. See the article, This Spice is a Great Antioxidant.) They also compared results from the cumin extract and a common diabetes drug, glibenclamide.

Diabetic rats were given either the cumin seed extract or glibenclamide for 28 days. The researchers found that both treatments caused a reduction in blood glucose, creatinine (a waste molecule that can build up in the kidneys) and blood urea nitrogen. Both treatments also improved insulin and glycogen (liver and skeletal muscle) content when compared to diabetic control rats.

When it came to preventing oxidative stress, the cumin seed extract and glibenclamide began to show differences. The cumin seed extract caused a significant reduction in renal oxidative stress compared to the diabetic controls and glibenclamide. The cumin seed extract also improved antioxidant status in the kidney and pancreas of the diabetic rats. Some other interesting changes in the diabetic rats given the cumin extract occurred. Their collagen levels improved, as did their ability to digest proteins.

The researchers concluded that a cumin seed extract exerts an antidiabetic effect similar to that of glibenclamide, but that it has a better effect in controlling oxidative stress.
