These Supplements Help Keep Colon Cancer at Bay

One of the oldest healing foods around is the unmistakable root vegetable, ginger. A prized asset throughout many ancient systems of medicine (like Chinese medicine), ginger has long been linked to health benefits. This new one is very exciting: ginger supplements may help prevent colon cancer.
Cancer prevention is the name of the game, of course. In the latest study, ginger supplements lowered colon inflammation, suggesting that this supplement may have potential as a colon cancer prevention agent. It was published in “Cancer Prevention Research.”
Researchers enrolled 30 patients and randomly assigned them to two grams of ginger root supplements per day or placebo for a month. After 28 days, they measured levels of colon inflammation and found statistically significant reductions in most of these inflammation markers in those who took ginger.
In old studies, inflammation has been implicated as a precursor to colon cancer. That said, a separate trial would be needed to see exactly how ginger root affects risk for colon cancer, one of the most fatal cancers.
The researchers believe that interest in this finding, and others in the natural medicine world, will only increase as time goes on. That is because people are increasingly looking for ways to prevent cancer that are non-toxic, and ways to improve quality of life that are not expensive.
Here are some other ways you could reduce your risk for colon cancer. Get regular screenings starting in your 40s. There is a variety of tests available; just work out which might be best for you with your doctor.
Also, you can modify your lifestyle to help prevent colon cancer. Some tips:
– Eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. They contain nutrients, fiber and antioxidants that help shield you from cancer.
– Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all. Aim for no more than a drink a day for women, and two a day for men.
– If you smoke, quit. Lung cancer is far from the only cancer you put yourself at risk for with this habit.
– Exercise as often as you can. Optimally, get a half hour every day.
– Try to keep a healthy weight. Eating right and exercising will certainly help. If you need to shed pounds, ask a doctor or physiotherapist about ways to do so. Increase exercise and reduce caloric intake.

Can This Vitamin Actually Battle Cancer?

Over the years, vitamin A has had many links with the dreaded C-word. In my second article in the series on vitamin A, let’s explore how it might help you prevent — and even treat — certain types of cancer.
First, vitamin A could help prevent breast cancer. Over a five-year study, retinoids were able to reduce the risk of second breast cancer in premenopausal women. They were given a synthetic vitamin A, called “fenretinide,” at a dose of 200 milligrams (mg) a day. The nutrient may also help protect the liver from cancer. Synthetic vitamin A, acyclic retinoid, prevented the development of a second liver cancer and improved survival in a Japanese report.

It was thought that vitamin A could help prevent lung cancer, the world’s most fatal tumor. But it may in fact be the opposite. Most clinical studies failed to show that vitamin A protected against lung cancer. Then, in a large trial 10 years ago, about 9,000 smokers and people with asbestos exposure were randomized to received a daily dose of 25,000 international units (IU) of retinal and 30 mg of beta-carotene or placebo. Unbelievably, lung cancer was 28% higher among the supplemented group. Whether or not vitamin A has a deleterious effect in non-smokers is unknown, but if you smoke it would seem unwise to supplement here.
As for actually treating cancer, there is one decent connection for vitamin A: Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). This is the most curable type of adult forms of leukemia and that has much to do with vitamin A. Over the past decade, the use of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), the acid form of vitamin A, alone or alongside chemotherapy has been standard treatment for APL. And it has had great success. ATRA has significantly improved the prognosis and survival for these patients at two years (55%) and four years (85%). The overall survival rate is between 70% and 80% now.
In this regard, that is one powerful vitamin.

Compared to those who have never used it, young people who use indoor tanning have a 69% higher risk of developing a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma (BCC), according to a new study led by researchers from the Yale School of Public Health in the US that was published online on 12 December in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
The researchers found the risk was strongest among women and went up with every year of using indoor tanning.
A number of studies published recently shows an increase in people, particularly young women, with BCC. The researchers in this study concluded that a quarter of cases of early-onset BCC could be prevented, and as many as 43% among women, if people never used indoor tanning at all.
Senior author Susan T Mayne, professor at the School of Public Health, told the press:
"Indoor tanning was strikingly common in our study of young skin cancer patients, especially in the women, which may partially explain why 70 percent of early-onset BCCs occur in females."
Mayne said they were also "surprised to find that one-third of our study participants with BCC had already had at least one additional BCC before age 40, which is very alarming as skin cancers increase in frequency with age".
BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, it rarely spreads or kills, but it can invade surrounding tissue and cause unsightly disfigurement. Most occur on parts of the body that are repeatedly exposed to the sun, such as the head and neck, but there appears to be an increase in cases of them appearing on the torso.
For the study, Mayne and colleagues interviewed 376 patients diagnosed with BCC and 390 controls without BCC who had been diagnosed with minor, benign, skin conditions. All subjects were under 40 years of age. They answered questions about whether they had ever used indoor tanning, and if so, at what age they started, how often they used it, how long did sessions last, the number of burns received as a result of tanning, and the type of tanning machine.
Using statistical tools, they then calculated the odds of developing BCC, using those who had never used indoor tanning machines as the referent group.
The analysis showed that: Ever using an indoor tanning machine was linked to a 69% higher risk of early-onset BCC.
This link was stronger among young women, for those who developed more than one BCC, and for those whose BCCs appeared on the torso or extremities.
The risk went up in a "dose-dependent" fashion for each of three variables: each year of using indoor tanning, number of overall burns, and burns to biopsy site.
27% of early-onset BCCs, and as many as 43% in women, could be prevented if individuals never used indoor tanning machines.The researchers conclude:
"Indoor tanning was a strong risk factor for early-onset BCC, particularly among females. Indoor tanning should continue to be targeted by both policy-based and behavioral interventions, as the impact on BCC-associated morbidity may be substantial."
They say due to some of the study limitations, such as "potential recall bias of indoor tanning by patients and generalizability of the control population", the results need to be confirmed by further research.
Should these findings be confirmed, they add to recent evidence that indoor tanning is linked to melanoma, a less common but much deadlier form of skin cancer that is also increasing among young women.
First author Leah M. Ferrucci, a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Public Health, said:
"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for BCC indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer."
Estimates suggest around 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds every year, with young women being the most common users.

It is possible to "prove" anything with statistics.
In the case of tanning bed use, it is important not to burn the skin.
Still, and according to real experts on tanning and vitamin D, it is 10 to 30 times more dangerous for health not to tan regularly than the, easily negotiable, risk of tanning too much.
Why was not the statistic of BCC among people who used tanning beds but never burned themselves, reported?
Probably it was not enough scaring, if measured at all.

Five Ways to Lower Your Prostate Cancer Risk by 59%

You’ve heard about cruciferous vegetables before — how they’re good for you and can bolster your immune system. But how about some really impressive health news on the cruciferous veggie front? Researchers at the Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston and the Department of Urology at the University of California in San Francisco, just recently reported that adding these powerhouse vegetables to a weekly diet could reduce the risk for prostate cancer by as much as 59%.
For their study, the combined research team acknowledged that cruciferous vegetables, tomato sauce, and legumes have been associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer. However, many of these studies have been done in vitro or with animals and not on men already diagnosed with prostate cancer. The researchers therefore devised a clinical trial to examine whether intake of total vegetables, and specifically cruciferous vegetables, tomato sauce, and legumes, could reduce the risk of prostate cancer progression.
A total of 1,560 men diagnosed with non-metastatic prostate cancer were enrolled in the study. All participated in the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor, a United States prostate cancer registry. As a secondary analysis, the researchers also looked at other vegetable sub-groups, total fruit, and sub-groups of fruits. The participants were diagnosed primarily at community-based clinics and followed from 2004 to 2009. Vegetable and fruit intake was assessed via a food frequency questionnaire. Prostate cancer outcomes were assessed via urologist reports and medical records.
The researchers recorded 134 cases of prostate progression, 53 recurrences, 71 secondary treatments likely due to recurrence, six bone metastases, and four prostate cancer deaths. They determined that men with the highest intakes of cruciferous vegetables post-prostate cancer diagnosis, had a statistically significant 59% decreased risk of prostate cancer progression compared to men in the lowest quartile. The researchers stated that no other vegetable or fruit group was significantly associated with risk of prostate cancer progression. They concluded that cruciferous vegetable intake after diagnosis may reduce risk of prostate cancer progression.

Diabetes, Obesity After 60 May Drive Up Breast Cancer Risk
TUESDAY, Dec. 6 (HealthDay News) -- A woman's risk of developing breast cancer appears to rise if she has diabetes or is obese after age 60, a new study indicates.
Previous research has linked obesity and increased breast cancer risk, but "the diabetes link had not been clearly shown," said researcher Dr. Hakan Olsson, a professor of oncology at Lund University in Lund, Sweden.
He is scheduled to present his findings this week at the 2011 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
The diabetes link held even after he accounted for obesity and levels of blood lipids, such as cholesterol. It is an association, however, not proven cause and effect.
A strength of the study, Olsson said, is that it looked at the population as a whole, not only women with breast cancer. He studied the medical records of more than 2,700 patients for up to 10 years before they developed breast cancer and also records for about 20,500 patients who never developed cancer.
Obesity after age 60 boosted breast cancer risk by 55 percent, Olsson said. To put this in perspective, while 15 of 100 obese women, at the most, would get breast cancer, fewer than 10 of 100 women in the general population would be expected to get breast cancer, Olsson explained.
Up to four years after a diabetes diagnosis, women of any age had a 37 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer, he said.
Olsson also found a link between abnormally low levels of blood lipids or fats, mostly cholesterol, and a 25 percent higher risk of breast cancer. Women with higher cholesterol levels had a lower risk, he found.
This puzzling finding needs to be studied more, the researcher noted.
The type of diabetes drug a woman takes also seemed to influence breast cancer risk, Olsson said. Glargine (Lantus) was linked with a nearly doubled risk of breast cancer. However, metformin (Glucophage, Fortamet, others) was linked with a slightly lower risk.
"If a woman has diabetes, she should be aware that certain cancer forms might appear [more often], and one is breast cancer," Olsson said.
Women with diabetes might also ask their doctor which diabetes drug is best for them and will minimize their cancer risk, he said. However, the study numbers were too small to conclude these drugs directly affect cancer risk, he added.
The new finding is the diabetes and cancer link, said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, director of women's heart disease at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. But it doesn't surprise her, she said.
"We've known that obesity is associated with breast cancer," she said. "A lot of obese people have diabetes."
The take-home message for women, she said, is that minimizing their breast cancer risk -- now, trying to maintain a healthy weight and avoid diabetes -- will also help their heart health, Steinbaum said.
Olsson will continue the research and explore the lipid level and breast cancer link. Meanwhile, women should watch their weight and aim for a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25, Olsson said. BMI is a calculation based on height and weight. A BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight, and 30 or over is obese.
Because this research was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Obesity Linked to Worse Outcomes With Early Breast Cancer
WEDNESDAY, Dec. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Obese women with early stage breast cancer are less likely to survive than other women who are of normal weight, new research suggests.
Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine are slated to present their findings Wednesday at the 2011 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
"The findings add to the body of evidence indicating that obesity, in general, increases a patient's chance for having a worse prognosis," lead researcher Dr. Sao Jiralerspong, an assistant professor of medicine at Baylor, said in a symposium news release. "Obesity is a probable risk factor for worse breast cancer outcomes, and ours is the latest study to suggest it has an effect on treatment outcome as well."
In conducting the study, researchers analyzed the link between weight and treatment of 4,368 women with early-stage breast cancer over the course of 25 years. The investigators found that the participants who were overweight had survival rates that were similar to the women of normal weight, but those who were obese had an increased risk for shorter time to recurrence, and worse disease-free and overall survival.
Although the obese women who received no additional chemotherapy or endocrine therapy had worse outcomes, the study noted that obese patients who received chemotherapy fared significantly worse than normal-weight patients.
Jiralerspong suggested that biological factors linked to extra weight -- such as higher blood insulin and estrogen levels, inflammation and growth factors secreted by fat cells -- could help explain these findings.
The researchers also revealed, however, that obese women treated with endocrine therapy, primarily tamoxifen, had significantly better survival rates than women who were of normal weight.
"Finding that overweight patients have a better outcome than normal-weight patients after tamoxifen treatment is surprising. We are examining the possible reasons for this," noted Jiralerspong.
Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
In addition, more research is needed to understand how obesity affects treatment for breast cancer, particular since new treatments have been introduced since the study was conducted, the researchers added.

Obesity Linked to Higher Esophageal Cancer Death Rates
FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Obese people who have had surgery to treat esophageal cancer are twice as likely to have a recurrence of the disease or die from cancer within five years as patients of normal weight, according to a new study.
In the study, published in the Dec. 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., suggested their findings could change the way some doctors treat obese patients with this type of cancer.
The investigators followed 778 people who had surgery for esophageal cancer and found that those who were classified as obese (a body mass index of 30 or higher) had a five-year survival rate of 18 percent. That survival rate jumped to 36 percent among people who were not overweight.
"Obesity is considered a risk factor in the development of this cancer, which is known to be both highly lethal and increasingly common," the study's lead investigator, Dr. Harry Yoon, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, said in a Mayo news release. "But prior to this study, we did not really understand the impact of obesity in this upper gastrointestinal cancer."
The study authors pointed out that their findings applied only to nonsmokers who had their esophagus removed. Yoon added that previous research has linked obesity to greater risk for cancer as well as increased risk of death from other types of tumors because extra weight results in a chronic inflammatory state.
The researchers noted their findings could change the approach they take with obese patients with esophageal cancer.
"As an oncologist, I did not typically speak to my patients about excess body weight as part of their care, because we are more often concerned about weight loss and maintaining proper nutrition, but that may change," said Yoon. "It would be helpful to be able to offer patients some measures that they can take to possibly impact their prognosis."

In the first national nutrition survey, 190 adult women with breast cancer were found amid a random sampling of about 5,000 women. This study showed that vitamin D could protect a woman from breast cancer up to 20 years later! Thus, proper vitamin-D intake at all times during life is important.
Another long-term study with more than 88,000 women showed that higher levels of vitamin D were linked with a lower breast cancer risk in premenopausal women. More calcium and vitamin D meant less dense breast tissue, in which cancer thrives. For postmenopausal women, getting at least 1,250 milligrams (mg) of calcium meant a lower risk of breast cancer than those getting under 500 mg. But here calcium and vitamin-D supplements didn’t have any impact on cancer risk.
A study from Norway strongly suggests that getting high levels of vitamin D3 from sunlight at the time a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer improves the prognosis.
Vitamin D’s protection might extend to many other cancers, too. For example, some scientists have shown that UV light and vitamin D could reduce an incredible 17 different types of cancer, including: bladder, non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, uterine cancer, renal, rectal, prostate, ovarian, gastric, esophageal, colon, and breast. More studies, as usual, need to be done.
I and my colleagues in the area of vitamins offer these five bits of advice about improving your vitamin-D levels and maintaining good health:
1. Request a blood measurement of active vitamin D as part of every physical.
2. Reasonable exposure to the sun in the spring, the summer and the fall is about 15 minutes a day. The best times are between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with your arms, legs, face and hands exposed.
3. After the initial exposure, apply a quality sunscreen to protect your skin.
4. If you do not get sun exposure in a day, take 1,000 IU of vitamin D through diet and through supplements.
5. Foods include fatty fish, shrimp, liver, eggs, enriched milk, and dairy products, and fortified bread and cereals.

Colon cancer usually takes hold in the large intestine or the rectum. Use This to Lower Your Risk of Colorectal Cancer
An important new study has come out saying that eating a diet high in fiber could protect you from colorectal cancer. Published in the prestigious “BMJ,” it identified fiber from cereal and whole grains as being most important. You want to know how to prevent cancer? This is one solid answer.
We’ve long known that fiber-rich foods are healing foods. Eating fiber and whole grains helps protect against heart disease. But its association with colorectal cancer risk is less clear, though studies have been addressing it for 40 years.
The new results help clarify the picture. Increasing fiber intake, particularly cereal fiber and whole grains, helps prevent colorectal cancer. Whole-grain foods include whole-grain breads and cereals, oatmeal, brown rice, and porridge.
The third most common cancer, colorectal cancer strikes 1.2 million people each year. The new study is part of a project by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research.
Researchers analyzed 25 studies involving nearly two million participants. Though the overall reductions in cancer risk were small, it clearly showed that dietary fiber had a protective effect. For every 10 grams of dietary fiber per day, there was a 10% reduced risk of colorectal cancer. If you add three servings (90 grams/day) of whole grains, you get a 20% reduced risk.
Strangely, there was no great evidence showing a link between fruit or vegetable fiber and risk of colorectal cancer. So for colon cancer, it appears that cereal fiber and whole grain fiber are key.
What’s more: boosting your intake of fiber may drop your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, being overweight, obesity, and even death by any cause. Replacing any refined grains with whole grains in your diet can go a long way toward optimal health.
This adds more weight to the notion that whole grains carry big-time health benefits. Science is still trying to figure out what actual mechanisms are responsible for this. But there is no doubt that whole grains are powerfully healthy healing foods.

Steps Women Can Take To Lower Breast Cancer Risk, Report

A new Institute of Medicine (IOM) report released on Wednesday concludes there are some evidence-based steps women can take to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer associated with environmental factors. These include avoiding unnecessary medical radiation (such as unessential X-rays and CT-scans), not smoking, avoiding use of estrogen-progestin menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if possible, limiting alcohol intake, keeping to a healthy weight (especially after the menopause), and exercising regularly.
The report, which was released at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, and is also available to view online, points out that these are preventive steps that focus on those environmental risk factors (including lifestyle choices) where there is consistent scientific evidence of a link with breast cancer.
It also suggests there is evidence, although this is less clear, of a link between breast cancer and exposure to certain chemicals, such as those found in some workplace settings, gasoline fumes, vehicle exhaust, and tobacco smoke. These include benzene, 1,3-butadiene, and ethylene oxide.
The IOM says there are other areas where evidence is "provocative" and inconclusive, but sufficient to warrant "priority attention" such as overnight shift work and other ways that disrupt the sleep cycle; chemicals that mutate genes or alter their expression, or affect hormones such as estrogen; plus interactions between genetic and environmental factors.
Contrary to some popularly held beliefs, avoiding personal use of hair dyes, and non-ionizing radiation emitted by technological devices like mobile phones, will not affect a woman's risk of breast cancer, says the IOM report, as several studies now have shown no link between these factors and the disease.
Overall, the report find there have been some major advances in our understanding of breast cancer and the things that raise the risk of developing it, but we need to do more research to find out exactly what causes the disease and how to prevent it.
Over the course of a lifetime, many changes happen to a woman's body, including her breasts. New information suggests women and girls may be susceptible to different risk factors at different life stages, so the IOM recommends that future research takes a "life-course approach" to studying the effects of exposure throughout the lifespan, including at specific stages of breast development. It needs to look at cumulative exposure as well as multiple exposure over the lifespan.
Too much of our knowledge is based on studies that focus on the few years before diagnosis, but more recent research suggests we also need to look at exposure that happens much earlier in life, even in childhood, as well as key stages in physiological development and change, such as adolescence, pregnancy, and menopause.
The report uses the term "environment" in a broad sense, and reviews evidence on a range of factors that women encounter in their day to day lives. These factors include: ionizing radiation, combination estrogen-progestin hormone therapy, body weight after the menopause, and physical exercise. But for many other factors, the evidence from human studies is either limited, contradictory, or absent, says the report.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization that describes itself as the "largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists", commissioned the IOM report.
The brief was to review the current evidence on breast cancer and the environment, including gene-environment interactions, look at the research challenges, explore any actions that women might take to reduce their risk where there is good evidence to support this, and recommend directions for future research.
Since its inception in 1982, the organization has invested more than $1.9 billion in non-profit funds to fight breast cancer around the world.
Their President, Elizabeth Thompson, said in a statement that:
"Understanding the role that environmental factors play in the development of breast cancer is hugely complex and the IOM has done a good job laying out the challenges. We intend to use these findings to guide our decisions about research to fund, so that women and their families have the best science to guide them in making important lifestyle choices. We believe our efforts going forward will be made even more effective through the guidance provided by this study."
Thompson drew attention to the fact the IOM stressed more research is needed before we can get a clear picture of which substances can definitely be tied to breast cancer. She said the organization is now:
"... issuing a challenge to other agencies working in the environmental area to join with Susan G. Komen to create a fund to begin work on these very important initiatives."
Estimates suggest more than 230,000 American women will receive a diagnosis for breast cancer in 2011.

Every now and then, reports came out saying women can control their chances of having BC, weigh management, alcohol, life style. I'm sick and angry at these reports. It camouflage the truth, that those of us who have BC do not know why. I'm slim, Asian, never drink, never smoke, never do drug of any kinds, eat organic healthy diet, exercise and out of the blue I got BC. These articles gave permission to others to view my cause of BC as not taking care of myself, that I AM CAUSING my BC. Bull^@%#%S%

These researchers need to speak plainly: formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, alcohol, ethanol limonene, naphthalene, phenal, pinene, benzyl alcohol, campher, dichlorobenzene, and other harmful chemicals are found in scented candles, air-fresheners, lotions, shampoos, soaps, other hair and body products, and cosmetics. These products are marketed to the public as "nice," "clean," "fresh," "healthy" and so on----but they are really evil products that cause migraines, allergies, asthma, cancer, and other ailments.

Indoor Tanning Strong Risk Factor For Skin Cancer In Young People

Compared to those who have never used it, young people who use indoor tanning have a 69% higher risk of developing a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma (BCC), according to a new study led by researchers from the Yale School of Public Health in the US that was published online on 12 December in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
The researchers found the risk was strongest among women and went up with every year of using indoor tanning.
A number of studies published recently shows an increase in people, particularly young women, with BCC. The researchers in this study concluded that a quarter of cases of early-onset BCC could be prevented, and as many as 43% among women, if people never used indoor tanning at all.
Senior author Susan T Mayne, professor at the School of Public Health, told the press:
"Indoor tanning was strikingly common in our study of young skin cancer patients, especially in the women, which may partially explain why 70 percent of early-onset BCCs occur in females."
Mayne said they were also "surprised to find that one-third of our study participants with BCC had already had at least one additional BCC before age 40, which is very alarming as skin cancers increase in frequency with age".
BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, it rarely spreads or kills, but it can invade surrounding tissue and cause unsightly disfigurement. Most occur on parts of the body that are repeatedly exposed to the sun, such as the head and neck, but there appears to be an increase in cases of them appearing on the torso.
For the study, Mayne and colleagues interviewed 376 patients diagnosed with BCC and 390 controls without BCC who had been diagnosed with minor, benign, skin conditions. All subjects were under 40 years of age. They answered questions about whether they had ever used indoor tanning, and if so, at what age they started, how often they used it, how long did sessions last, the number of burns received as a result of tanning, and the type of tanning machine.
Using statistical tools, they then calculated the odds of developing BCC, using those who had never used indoor tanning machines as the referent group.
The analysis showed that: Ever using an indoor tanning machine was linked to a 69% higher risk of early-onset BCC.
This link was stronger among young women, for those who developed more than one BCC, and for those whose BCCs appeared on the torso or extremities.
The risk went up in a "dose-dependent" fashion for each of three variables: each year of using indoor tanning, number of overall burns, and burns to biopsy site.
27% of early-onset BCCs, and as many as 43% in women, could be prevented if individuals never used indoor tanning machines.The researchers conclude:
"Indoor tanning was a strong risk factor for early-onset BCC, particularly among females. Indoor tanning should continue to be targeted by both policy-based and behavioral interventions, as the impact on BCC-associated morbidity may be substantial."
They say due to some of the study limitations, such as "potential recall bias of indoor tanning by patients and generalizability of the control population", the results need to be confirmed by further research.
Should these findings be confirmed, they add to recent evidence that indoor tanning is linked to melanoma, a less common but much deadlier form of skin cancer that is also increasing among young women.
First author Leah M. Ferrucci, a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Public Health, said:
"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for BCC indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer."
Estimates suggest around 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds every year, with young women being the most common users.

It is possible to "prove" anything with statistics.
In the case of tanning bed use, it is important not to burn the skin.
Still, and according to real experts on tanning and vitamin D, it is 10 to 30 times more dangerous for health not to tan regularly than the, easily negotiable, risk of tanning too much.
Why was not the statistic of BCC among people who used tanning beds but never burned themselves, reported?
Probably it was not enough scaring, if measured at all.

Survival Of Gynecological Cancer Improved In The Anglia Region Of England

Gynaecological cancer survival rates have improved in Eastern England following the reorganisation of services and multidisciplinary team working finds a new study published in the gynaecological oncology themed issue of BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
In 1999, the Department of Health (DH) produced good-practice guidance on commissioning cancer services for gynaecology, entitled Improving Outcomes in Gynaecological Cancer. The new guidance called for a reorganisation of services, working in multidisciplinary teams and a concentration of surgical expertise in centres.
In addition, in 2000 the DH published referral guidance for primary care for symptoms that were suggestive of cancer (the 2-week wait initiative). Hospital providers were expected to respond to the referral in a timely fashion, with a target of 2 weeks between the date of referral and the first appointment. It was hoped this would improve outcomes and address the variation in access to diagnosis and treatment.
In the Anglia Cancer Network (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk), the guidance was implemented by the year 2000, with the centralisation of care predominantly shifting to Addenbrookes Hospital, serving a population of 1.5 million and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital serving a population of 850,000.
This paper looks at 3406 cases of invasive gynaecological cancer between 1996 and 2003 in this area. Sixty percent of the cases had known tumour stage and grade and the majority of cases relate to endometrial and ovarian cancer (77.4%).
The study found that the survival of cancers diagnosed between 1997 and 1999 was effectively identical to the survival of cancers diagnosed in the baseline year, 1996. Survival of cases diagnosed between 2000 and 2003 increased significantly: Overall 17% improvement; uterine cancer improved by nearly 10% (9.5) to 83% and ovarian cancer improved by 45% to nearly 40% when compared with cancers diagnosed in the four earlier years. These changes have been most significant within endometrial and ovarian cancers.
Dr Robin Crawford, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist, Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, and co-author of the paper said:
"The data shows that there has been a significant increase in survival of gynaecological cancers over the time period reviewed.
"In addition to the minor year-on-year improvements, there was a significant stepwise improvement in survival in 2000, following the major reorganisation in the region.
"Centralising services and working in multidisciplinary teams has been shown to improve patient care significantly and most importantly survival rates.
"Further work is being undertaken to ensure that these improvements are continued."
BJOG Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Pierre Martin-Hirsch, added:
"It is exciting to see such promising results. This cancer network implemented new policies very promptly and as a result there has been a significant improvement in the gynaecological cancer survival rates.
"This paper confirms the findings in a recent Macmillan report based on research from the Cancer Research UK Cancer Survival Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine demonstrating improved survival times for women with cancer. Cancer patients are surviving for longer and an example of new initiatives aiding this is the work being undertaken in the Anglia region."

A Breakthrough in Detecting Lung Cancer Earlier

A health breakthrough in the field of cancer prevention is currently underway in Germany. It is specifically for lung cancer, the world’s most fatal tumor. The foundation is being laid for detecting lung cancer earlier, which would improve the outcome for millions of people. The best kind of health news is the kind about saving lives.
Scientists have found nearly 500 molecules whose concentration in the blood changes when a person develops lung cancer. These molecules — nucleic acids — either increase or decrease in numbers in the blood. And it is these that can be detected as a way to know if lung cancer is developing, according to a new study.
The best part is that these changes still happen if the tumor is in a very early stage. In lung cancer, there are four stages. In stages three and four, the outcome is likely not good and the best doctors can do is postpone eventual death. But stage-one lung cancer can be treated surgically and it can even be cured. The problem: only about 15% of these tumors are detected that early. The hope is that this simple blood test could raise the number of patients whose cancer is found early.
Such a test could be performed with results measured in the same day. The future of lung cancer treatment will depend in large part on early detection. And a screening test may be part of routine practice. The doctor takes a blood sample and, within a day, knows with a fair degree of certainty that lung cancer is present. And that is despite there being no symptoms yet.
The study investigated the blood of over 200 smokers. About half of them had lung cancer; the others were either entirely healthy or suffered from another lung disease. So they went to see if a test could differentiate lung cancer patients from healthy subjects. It is then that they found the nucleic acids and the patterns.
So, what’s happening now? There are plans for a much larger study to confirm the results. If true, there would be nothing standing in the way of developing the blood test to the point of being ready to be put on the market. And that is good news for everyone.

Link Between High Blood Sugar and Colon Cancer Discovered

Any health breakthrough in the field of the often-fatal colon cancer is one worth publishing and discussing. Here is one about how what’s floating around in your bloodstream affects your cancer risk. Sugar, that is.
High blood glucose levels — a hallmark of type 2 diabetes — is linked with a higher risk of colorectal cancer, according to a new study published online in the “British Journal of Cancer.”
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the U.S. In 2007 (the most recent year where figures are available), 142,672 Americans were diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 53,219 people died from the disease.
The new trial involved 5,000 postmenopausal women enrolled in the groundbreaking Women’s Health Initiative study. For these women, fasting blood sugar and insulin levels had been measured at the start of the study and then several more times over the next dozen years.
By the end of the 12-year period, 81 women had developed colorectal cancer. Researchers found that elevated glucose levels were associated with increased colorectal cancer risk. Women with the highest levels were nearly twice as likely to have developed colorectal cancer as women in the lowest levels. This held true over time.

We also know that obesity is a risk factor for colorectal cancer. Obesity is generally accompanied by elevated blood levels of insulin and glucose. Researchers have long suspected that obesity’s influence on colorectal cancer risk stems from the elevated insulin levels it causes. But this new piece of research suggests that obesity’s impact on this cancer may be due to blood sugar levels instead.
The next step is to find out how this link is happening. The researchers say that it is possible that elevated glucose levels are linked to increased blood levels of growth factors and inflammatory factors that spur the growth of intestinal polyps — some of which later develop into cancer.

Could Allergies Help Protect You From Cancer?

It’s not often you hear good news about allergies, but this health e-letter is about to give you some. Allergies, as you probably know, can be debilitating for some people. Contact allergies can be particularly troublesome. These are the allergies that crop up when you come into contact with a specific substance like a chemical or a metal. But now researchers have some positive news about contact allergies: apparently people with this type of allergy may have immune systems that could protect against certain cancers.
In a new study, researchers looked at almost 17,000 Danish adults who were tested for contact allergies between 1984 and 2008. About one-third (or 35%) tested positive for at least one contact allergy. After looking at the data, the research team determined that women were more likely than men to have a contact allergy — 41% versus 26%. Now here’s where the study gets really interesting. When the research team examined cancer cases among the participants over the long term, they found that men and women with contact allergies had significantly lower rates of breast and non-melanoma skin cancer. Not only that — but women with contact allergies also had lower rates of brain cancer compared to those without contact allergies.
On the downside, people with contact allergies did show higher rates of bladder cancer. The researchers explained this anomaly by suggesting that higher levels of chemical metabolites accumulated in the blood may have contributed to bladder cancer.
Unfortunately, the researchers could not comment on why the link between contact allergies and lower risk for some cancers exists. They hope to perform more research. They do know the link has something to do with the immune system. Perhaps finding the reason for the connection will lead to a better understanding of how the immune system, altered in just the right way, could prevent the growth of cancerous tumors.
