Your Best Defense Against the “D” Word

Your Best Defense Against the The “D” word stands for diarrhea and surely it needs no introduction. In the second of my series on probiotics, I explore how these friendly bacteria can do wonders “down there” and help quell a case of the “D” word.

Versus Acute Diarrhea

Using probiotics for treating sudden cases of infectious diarrhea in children is well studied. Good-quality studies have shown that probiotics (“Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG,” “L. reuteri,” “L. casei,” “Shirota,” and “Bifidobactrium factis”) shortened the duration of diarrhea caused by a virus. It seems, though, that probiotics are effective only for rotavirus-associated diarrhea, and not diarrhea triggered by another virus or bacteria. This is the most common form of viral diarrhea in the world, and affects children under the age of five mostly. It accounts for many hospital trips every year. Whatever the case, probiotics seems to work in relieving acute cases of diarrhea in infants and children, although only certain kinds show this beneficial effect. Only “Lactobacillus GG” has been proven.

Versus Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea

Antibiotics can cause up to 40% of diarrhea in hospitalized patients. And you thought they were supposed to do good! Well, they do, but a typical side effect is trouble in the gut. One common culprit is “C. difficile,” an organism that triggers the diarrhea episodes. Last decade, there were several large-scale studies on the effects of probiotics in this area. I’ve narrowed them down to the best six.

2002: A study finds that probiotics can be used to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea. “S. boulardii” and “Lactobacilli” are potentially useful.

2002: Seven trials totaling nearly 900 patients find a strong suggestion that probiotics are beneficial. While more studies are needed to prove a beneficial effect, two kinds stand out: “Lactobacillus” and “Saccharomyces.”

2005: Four of six studies find a significant reduction in the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea with “Lactobacillus.”

2005: In five studies totaling nearly 1,100 people with respiratory tract infections, the probiotic “S. boulardii” reduced the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea from 17.2% to 6.7%.

2006: Taking 31 studies totaling nearly 3,200 patients, researchers looked at a number of probiotic combinations. Different probiotics showed promising results, while only “S. boulardii” proved effective for “C. difficile” diarrhea.

2006: In about 700 patients, those treated with “Lactobacillus” or “S. boulardii” at a daily dose of at least five billion bacterial units showed promising results. Future studies are needed.

The Vitamin to Shield Against Breast Cancer

The Vitamin to Shield Against Breast CancerIn my final installment on the sunshine vitamin’s effects on cancer prevention, we’ll look at how it could help shield against breast cancer. And I leave you with some important final thoughts.

*Read the first three parts of this series here:
Part 1: The Cancer-fighting Vitamin Revealed
Part 2: More Great News on the Cancer-fighting Vitamin
Part 3: How This Vitamin Supports Cancer Prevention

In the first national nutrition survey, 190 adult women with breast cancer were found amid a random sampling of about 5,000 women. This study showed that vitamin D could protect a woman from breast cancer up to 20 years later! Thus, proper vitamin-D intake at all times during life is important.

Another long-term study with more than 88,000 women showed that higher levels of vitamin D were linked with a lower breast cancer risk in premenopausal women. More calcium and vitamin D meant less dense breast tissue, in which cancer thrives. For postmenopausal women, getting at least 1,250 milligrams (mg) of calcium meant a lower risk of breast cancer than those getting under 500 mg. But here calcium and vitamin-D supplements didn’t have any impact on cancer risk.

A study from Norway strongly suggests that getting high levels of vitamin D3 from sunlight at the time a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer improves the prognosis.

Vitamin D’s protection might extend to many other cancers, too. For example, some scientists have shown that UV light and vitamin D could reduce an incredible 17 different types of cancer, including: bladder, non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, uterine cancer, renal, rectal, prostate, ovarian, gastric, esophageal, colon, and breast. More studies, as usual, need to be done.

I and my colleagues in the area of vitamins offer these five bits of advice about improving your vitamin-D levels and maintaining good health:

1. Request a blood measurement of active vitamin D as part of every physical.

2. Reasonable exposure to the sun in the spring, the summer and the fall is about 15 minutes a day. The best times are between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with your arms, legs, face and hands exposed.

3. After the initial exposure, apply a quality sunscreen to protect your skin.

4. If you do not get sun exposure in a day, take 1,000 IU of vitamin D through diet and through supplements.

5. Foods include fatty fish, shrimp, liver, eggs, enriched milk, and dairy products, and fortified bread and cereals.

The Food That Protects You Against Alzheimer’s

The Food That Protects You Against Alzheimer'sFish belongs in the category of foods that make you smarter. But, according to a brand new study, it also belongs in the brain protection category. Because people who eat fish, cooked in these two ways, may be reducing their risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers found that people who eat baked or broiled fish every week can boost their brain health and lower their risk of Alzheimer’s and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

It is believed to be the first ever study to directly link fish consumption with brain structure and Alzheimer’s risk. Just one serving of fish a week (lower than the generally recommended amount of two) led to better preservation of gray matter in the brain areas where Alzheimer’s disease tends to strike.

Alzheimer’s is an incurable, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and cognitive skills. More than five million Americans may have it. In MCI, memory loss is present but to a lesser extent than in Alzheimer’s disease. But MCI often leads to Alzheimer’s disease.

So, to that study. Researchers took 260 healthy adults and gathered information on fish consumption. Of them, 163 ate fish on a weekly basis; the majority one to four times per week. The researchers then tried to determine if preserved gray matter linked with fish consumption reduced Alzheimer’s risk. When gray matter volume is higher, the brain is stronger, healthier.

So, they found that consuming baked or broiled fish was positively associated with gray matter volumes in three key areas of the brain. It reduced the risk for MCI or Alzheimer’s by almost five-fold.

Essentially, the fish promotes stronger neurons in the brain’s gray matter by making them larger and healthier. The results also demonstrated increased levels of cognition in people who ate the fish. This included working memory, which allows people to focus on tasks and commit information to short-term memory. Working memory is destroyed by Alzheimer’s. But people who ate fish each week had higher levels of working memory.

One note to tartar sauce lovers: fried fish (the hallmark of fish and chips) was not shown to boost brain volume or protect against cognitive decline. So, boiled or baked it is. For more on the wrong fish to eat, read the article, The Unhealthiest Fish You Can Eat
