Using Light to Cure Skin Problems

Using Light to Cure Skin ProblemsHave you ever thought of using light as therapy? It’s a therapy that pops up in alternative health news from time to time. The truth is that light has a very interesting effect on your body. Major physiological processes in your brain and body are switched on and off by the presence or absence of natural or artificial light. You probably don’t think much about this, but your body is responding to light and dark all the time. When you are exposed to light, a number of different things can happen. Here are eight potential health benefits light could hold for you:

1. Vitamin D is produced.

2. Melatonin (a hormone that affects mood) is inhibited.

3. Serotonin (a “feel good” brain chemical) is released.

4. Something called “norepinephrine” (a brain chemical that makes you more mentally alert) is stimulated.

5. Photoreceptors in your eyes convert sunlight into impulses that are sent to the brain.

6. Your endocrine system (a system of organs that release hormones in your body) is activated.

7. Your breathing, sleep, blood pressure, body temperature, appetite, mood, and immune system are affected.

8. The cerebral cortex in your brain (which controls learning, motivation, and creativity) uses light to function in a healthy way, as do your limbic system (the part of your brain that stores emotional impressions of the world), and your motor cortex (the part of your brain that coordinates movement).

That is a lot of different processes affected by the simple act of being in the presence of light! Now here’s one use of light as a natural therapy: for the treatment of psoriasis (follow this link for Chinese remedies that could heal this skin condition: http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-2/natural-remedies/six-top-chinese-remedies-for-this-skin-condition).

Researchers recently investigated whether narrowband ultraviolet B light therapy could heal patients with plaque-type psoriasis, leading to an improvement in the patients’ quality of life.

A total of 95 patients with psoriasis were recruited for the study. The research team found that administration of the light therapy to psoriasis patients significantly improved their quality of life and reduced the severity of their symptoms.

Interested in light therapy? There are many different ways that light may be used in therapy. Get your doctor’s advice about what type of light therapy is best for your particular condition.

Your Joint Pain Could Be Caused by Your Sleep Problems

Getting a good night’s sleep is a regular aspect of any doctor’s health advice. Right up there behind healthy eating and exercising. A new study has found an alarming link between sleep problems and an increased risk for joint pain. The kind caused by fibromyalgia.

It found that the risk of fibromyalgia increased with the severity of sleep problems. The study, performed on women, showed a stronger link in middle-aged and older women. Results were published in “Arthritis & Rheumatism.”

(Sleep problems don’t just affect joint pain. Read the article, How You Sleep Could Affect Your Blood Pressure)

Experts estimate that fibromyalgia — a chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome — affects more than five million Americans. Studies have shown it typically strikes in middle age, and 90% of patients are women. While previous research has found that insomnia, nighttime waking, and fatigue are symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia, it was unknown if sleep issues were actually helping cause fibromyalgia.

Researchers from Norway led the investigation, by scrutinizing a large health study. They selected 12,350 women who were free of musculoskeletal pain and movement disorders for the current study.

The findings were clear: a strong association exists between sleep disturbance and fibromyalgia risk in adult women. Women who often reported sleep problems had a greater risk of fibromyalgia than those who never experienced sleep problems.

At follow-up, 327 women had developed fibromyalgia. This is an incidence proportion of 2.6% during 10 years. The adjusted relative risk for women who reported having sleep problems “often” or “always” was 5.41 among women over 45 years of age. The researchers believe that more studies are needed to investigate whether early detection and treatment of sleep disturbance reduces the risk of fibromyalgia in women.

Insomnia is a frustrating part of life for a huge number of people. But it can be helped. Alternative medicine offers such relief as valerian root, melatonin, relaxation therapies, aromatherapy, and meditation. Tackling sleep disorders takes considerable effort, but it can be done. Speak to your physician and obtain a referral to a sleep clinic to get started and learn what the issues are.

These natural foods are absolutely key to natural health, and a new study has just slapped a big exclamation mark on things. It found that vegetarians may be at lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Specifically, the new study found that vegetarians experience a 36% lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome than non-vegetarians. Because metabolic syndrome can be a precursor to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, the findings indicate that vegetarians may be at lower risk of developing these conditions.

Metabolic syndrome means that you have at least three out of five of these: high blood pressure; low HDL cholesterol; high glucose levels; elevated triglycerides; and an unhealthy waist circumference. The researchers found that, while 25% of vegetarians had metabolic syndrome, the number rises to 37% for semi-vegetarians and 39% for non-vegetarians.

Since metabolic syndrome is such a big problem in the U.S. and leads to very dangerous health situations, the researchers wanted to find lifestyle choices that people could use to prevent and even treat the disorder.

They knew there would be differences between vegetarians and those who are not, but the researchers were surprised by the significant variance between the two groups. This shows that what you elect to eat in your daily diet can be important in the prevention of metabolic syndrome.

The health news came via a study on 700 adults randomly selected from a long-term study of lifestyle and health in nearly 100,000 people. Of the 700, 35% were vegetarian. These people had lower triglyceride levels, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, waist circumference, and body mass index. Semi-vegetarians also had a significantly lower BMI and waist circumference compared to those who ate meat more regularly.

This works once again to show that diet improves so many of the serious risk factors that put you at risk of heart disease. People who choose a plant-based diet are making a wise choice for health. While becoming a vegetarian may be difficult for most, choosing to ramp up vegetables in the diet is not hard at all.
