More Great News on the Cancer-fighting Vitamin
AppId is over the quota
In part two of my look at vitamin D’s (click here to see Part 1) powers of cancer prevention, I look into deficiencies in this nutrient before taking a peek at the first cancer it could help prevent: prostate cancer.
Deficiency
The only way to be sure that someone is “deficient” in vitamin D is to measure the blood. And that depends on the amount of skin exposed to sunlight and how much vitamin D is in the diet and in supplements. If it’s in the normal range, a person automatically has between a 30% and 50% lower risk of getting colon cancer, breast cancer, or prostate cancer. Only recently did we learn that a deficiency in North America is quite common. Especially in these groups of people:
– Over 50% of African Americans
– 84% of African Americans over 65
– 54% of community living residents over 50
– 38% of nursing home residents
– 41% of outpatient healthy adults 49-83 years old
– 32% of young adults in the Boston area at the end of the winter
Other than sun exposure, risk factors include obesity, bowel diseases, and problems with absorbing fat.
Prostate Cancer
The older you get, the higher your risk of prostate cancer. It doesn’t help that aging is also linked with less sun exposure, and a weakened ability for the body to produce vitamin D. Prostate cancer deaths are directly linked to low sun exposure.
In Finland, a study reported that low levels of vitamin D led to a more aggressive prostate cancer. Both low and high levels, as a matter of fact, have been linked with a higher prostate cancer risk. Therefore, future research will be needed to further our understanding of the relationship between vitamin D and prostate cancer — but, for now, having adequate amounts seems important.
The most active form of vitamin D is made in the kidney (it’s called calcitriol.) In the last decade, very encouraging proof suggests that this form may be a great addition to traditional treatments of difficult prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about whether you should be taking vitamin-D supplements and, if so, what type and at what dosage.

This Acid Is Great for Your Heart
AppId is over the quota
Taurine isn’t one of those minerals that get the spotlight in health news. It’s usually passed over in favor of other, better-known amino acids like homocysteine or tryptophan. But taurine has an important job to do when it comes to the proper functioning of your body. High concentrations of this amino acid are found in your heart muscle, skeletal muscle, nervous system and white blood cells.
Researchers at the Institute for World Health Development in Nishinomiya, Japan, investigated taurine for a possible beneficial role in the prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease. For their study, which was coordinated by the World Health Organization, the research team reviewed surveys pertaining to diet in 61 different Japanese populations. In particular, they collected data related to cardiovascular disease risk and mortality.
They found that participants with higher taurine levels had significantly lower body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and total cholesterol when compared with those having the lowest taurine levels. Cardiovascular risks were intensified in individuals whose taurine and magnesium levels were lowest. The researchers noted that taurine may beneficially affect those who experience salt-sensitive blood pressure rise.
The research team concluded that the preventative effects of taurine make it good for health and longevity. They also cite the example of Australian Aboriginals who live near the coastal areas in Victoria. These peoples traditionally ate taurine- and magnesium-rich foods and were free from the ravages of cardiovascular disease 200 years ago. Presently, though, this population has nearly the highest cardiovascular risks because of dietary changes. 200 years ago they were eating seafood, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and milk — a diet similar to that of prehistoric hunters’ and gatherers’ and high in taurine.
To boost your nutritional health, add these taurine-rich foods to your diet: eggs; fish; meat; and milk.

Why Women Should Consider This for Great Health
Probiotics, the popular natural supplements containing live friendly bacteria, have a wide spectrum of potential uses. That is what this series of articles has explored over the past several days. Here I look at some specific uses for probiotics for our female readership. And a bonus look at three common “atopic” diseases.
Urogenital infections, such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast vaginitis, and urinary tract infection, affect a staggering one billion women around the world. They do respond well to antibiotics. But these infections often recur; they keep happening, in part because the bacteria ascend from the rectum to the vagina and then the bladder. So antibiotics can’t be considered the best approach here.
A 2003 landmark study with 64 women showed that taking the probiotics “Lactobacillus rhamnosus” and “L. fermentum” every day helped reduce yeast and coliform bacteria in the vagina. A Canadian urologist first conceived the concept of restoring probiotics in the vagina as a way of preventing future infection. Since then, research has shown that certain strains of probiotics can colonize the vagina and reduce the risk of urinary tract infection, yeast vaginitis, and bacterial vaginosis. Women could reduce infections by between 50% and 80%.
Using probiotics in this way has great possibilities for patients and physicians. Women can take supplements by mouth, which then colonizes the intestine and vagina, thus maintaining urogenital health. This is a great step in the direction of therapy, because people can skip seeing the doctor and use it themselves, but the proper strain must be used for best effect.
Atopic Diseases
Atopic diseases are thought to be the result of an imbalanced immune response to our environmental or dietary allergens. The three involved here are allergic rhinitis (hay fever), atopic dermatitis, and asthma. The fact that there are more atopic diseases in the developed countries as compared to underdeveloped countries may be the result of reduced microbial pressure, or exposure to microbes during childhood.
Probiotics taken during pregnancy has been shown to confer protection against atopic disease in newborn infants. Supplements with “Bifidobacterium lactis” or “Lactobacillus GG” reduced the extent and severity of atopic eczema in infants and young children.
A 2006 study found that probiotics are effective in treating allergies caused by pollen, if you can believe it! Same goes for allergies caused by dust mites.
