The Two Things You Need to Cure Sleep Apnea

The Two Things You Need to Cure Sleep ApneaA new study has found a two-pronged approach to battling sleep apnea symptoms. Its health tip: combining a Mediterranean diet and regular physical activity could help you improve your night time rest.

The study looked at how the Mediterranean diet could help obese adults with sleep apnea compared to those with a typical diet. This health condition causes frequent pauses of breathing to occur during sleep. It can be dangerous over the long term, and is one of the most prevalent sleep-related breathing disorders. Two to four out of every 100 adults experience sleep apnea. But that rises 20% to 40% among obese individuals.

Here is how the Mediterranean diet differs from the typical one: three servings of red meat a week (compared to nine); three servings of fish a week (compared to one); four servings of fruit per day (compared to one or two); five servings of vegetables per day (compared to one or two); three servings of legumes per week (compared to one); six servings of whole grains per day (compared to two); and one or two glasses of red wine a day (compared to none).

Greek researchers examined 40 obese patients with apnea. Twenty patients were given a typical diet to follow, while the other 20 followed a Mediterranean diet. Both groups were also encouraged to increase their exercise, mainly involving walking for at least 30 minutes each day. And both received continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which involves wearing a mask that generates an air stream, keeping the upper airway open during sleep.

RECOMMENDED: How the Mediterranean Diet Could Make You Smarter

The results: those on the Mediterranean diet had fewer disturbances (called apnea), during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, which usually accounts for approximately 25% of total sleep during the night.

The findings also revealed that people following the Mediterranean diet a showed a greater adherence to the calorie-restricted diet, an increase in physical activity, and a greater decrease in stomach fat.

While the results need to be confirmed in larger studies, this is good news for people looking for answers to sleep apnea. Following the Mediterranean diet is in itself a very healthful approach to nutrition, as it is known to be involved in preventing a host of diseases.

Two Things You Must Eat to Lower Cholesterol

In the second-to-last article in my series on high cholesterol, I want to inform you of two more natural supplements that may aid in the battle. One is fish oil, which is linked to an extraordinary array of health benefits, this being yet another one. The other is the lesser-known herbal remedy artichoke. Both are foods, both are supplements. Let’s take stock of the evidence.

Fish Oil
For healthy individuals, the American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish twice a week. For those with coronary artery disease, one gram of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day is recommended. (Both EPA and DHA are strong omega-3s.) Other than fish, walnuts, canola oil and flaxseed are good dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are especially effective in lowering high triglycerides levels. In a recent meta-analysis of 47 human studies, the authors arrived at the conclusion that an average dose of omega-3 of 3.25 gram a day (1.9 gram EPA and 1.35 gram DHA daily) significantly lowered triglycerides (average: 20%) without significant changes in LDL, HDL or total cholesterol.

Even taking a small dose of omega 3 fatty acids (0.85 gram EPA + DHA a day) significantly reduced the risk of all-cause mortality, cardiac death, and sudden death by 21%, 35%, and 45%, respectively. The FDA-approved drug “Lovaza” has much higher concentration of EPA/DHA than over-the-counter fish oil. Each one-gram capsule has 375 mg of DHA and 465 mg of EPA. This drug is recommended for individuals with very high serum triglycerides (over 500 mg/dL), in a treatment of two to four grams daily. But this drug helps to show how powerful fish oil is.

Artichoke
In a meta-analysis of three human studies, there is early evidence that artichoke may be effective in lowering high cholesterol levels. It found that artichoke led to a reduction of total cholesterol levels by 4.3% after 12 weeks. Compared to placebo’s 8.8%, artichoke reduced total cholesterol by 18.5% at the study’s end. Artichoke significantly reduced total cholesterol in those with the highest levels of cholesterol.

We recently talked about artichokes and how they maintain their health benefits, even after cooking in the article, The Best Cooked Vegetable for Your Health.

Both are definite possibilities for those looking for a natural answer to high cholesterol.

Are There Such Things as Healthy Hotdogs?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Are There Such Things as Healthy Hotdogs? They are a beloved food served at barbecues, birthday parties and ballparks. But deep down we all know that the basic hotdog is not a healthy thing to eat. Recently, food chemists got together to see if a healthier fat could be used in the hotdog-making process to make these processed treats healthier for those who love them. Here’s what they found.

It was an effort to replace animal fat (saturated fat) in hotdogs, sausages, hamburgers and other not-so-optimal foods as far as nutrition is concerned. Along the way, scientists reported an advance in solving the mystery of why hot dogs are troublesome when animal fat is substituted out. Their report is in the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.”

The problem has been that the healthier vegetable oils give hotdogs an unpleasant, tough texture.

RECOMMENDED: Beware of Processed Meats

In the marketplace, some brands of sausage have been reformulated with an olive-oil-in-water emulsion as a source of more healthful fat. With consumers gobbling up tens of billions of hot dogs each year, and the typical frankfurter packing 80% of its calories from fat, hot dogs have become a prime candidate for reformulation.

Some hot dogs reformulated with vegetable oil develop an unpleasant, chewy texture. The researchers wanted to uncover the chemistry behind that change. so that they could help guide food companies toward a better version of a low-fat hotdog or sausage.

Let’s call it hotdog science! Using a lab instrument called an infrared spectrometer, the research group verified that sausages made with the heart-healthy olive oil emulsion stabilized with the protein casein were slightly tougher.

But when frankfurters were made with an emulsion stabilized with a combination of casein and the mouthful of an additive called “microbial transglutaminase,” the sausage become far tougher. Their lab study revealed a complicated-sounding process by which the healthier fats ended up making sausages tougher than those made with old-fashioned animal fat.

So, to answer the original question, so far, we can make healthier hotdogs, but they are not as soft and juicy and fun to eat. In spite of this result, there are many brands of “veggie dogs” on the market that contain a bounty of essential nutrients. Reading the health information on a package actually reveals surprisingly healthy, nutrient-dense hotdogs.

Until they can engineer a low-fat hotdog that’s palatable, switching out hotdogs for the non-meat version every so often is a very strong step toward better nutrition. And watch out for condiments, which are high in salt and low in nutrition.
